David Hockney was born in Bradford, England in 1936. Hockney attended art school before leaving to Los Angeles in 1960. There he began painting his most famous pool paintings. In 1970, he took interest in photography and enjoyed making photo collages, which he called "joiners". He's still very active in the art community and was voted the most influential British artist of the 20th century. My artwork emulates his style in the way that I used multiple images to create a college of the same picture, even if the images don't line up exactly to the original photo. I created my collage by taking photos of one area with differing angles. I took an image of the whole picture, and then went from top left-top right, etc. I did this by the compositional rule I wanted to do, and then found a place or object that showed the rule of line and crop. I created the collage using photoshop. In Photoshop, I opened file-new and made sure the dimensions were 11x14 with a 300 resolution. Using the move tool, I then dragged the image I wanted to add into the Photoshop icon. I then cropped the image to make it smaller to create my collage. I repeated the same step with all the images I used, changing the image sizes, in order to create my collage. Later after i was happy with my finished piece I merged all the layers together to get the finishing piece.

I chose the magazine i used because the way the model posed is the same way some a celebrity would pose for this magazine cover. What I like is my models pose. He made it look like he's been modeling for years and made it look like he's very experienced in modeling. What I did to emulate the magazine cover was have my model pose anyway he wanted. I continues to take more pictures in order to capture the right photograph. I then chose the right picture for the magazine and continued the process in emulating the picture. The font style I wanted to use was the same as the magazine but sadly it was not on photoshop for me to use. So instead i just used the closest to it which was MS Reference Sand Serif Regular. The colors I used for the font were red, gray, and white in order to match the same as the GQ Magazine. My setup for the process of the magazine cover was using lots of layer mask. I got a white background on google to match the one on the actual magazine cover. I then proceeded into making the layer masks. I got the magazine logo "GQ", put it on the left hand corner, then put article titles on the magazine the same way the magazine would have. Then i put everything together and got the finishing piece. A strobe light is a light that is used to produce regular flashes of light. I used tis through a cord that connected to my camera to the lights, and when i clicked to take a picture (pressed on the shutter), the light would trigger. I usd this when I wanted an image with lighting in a certain place in my picture. Modeling light is a light built into a flash unit that remains on while the flash is turned on when the photographer isn't taking a photo, allowing the photographer to assess highlight and shadow areas that will be made when exposing the subject to the brighter light of the flash.A softbox is a light modifier. A softbox diffuses the light into a pleasing soft, even light, so harsh shadows won't be so harsh. I would use a soft box when I want to emulate window light. A reflector is a piece of reflective material to bounce light in a certain direction. This is used to distribute light where it is not naturally or originally placed. You use it by capturing the light onto the material and moving the reflector in the direction of the subject so the light bounces in that direction. A grey card is a card with grey, black, and white colors on it. It is used to find the correct exposure for an image. A radio trigger is a small radio unit normally mounted on the camera hot shoe. A small receiver unit is also mounted on the off-camera flash. The radio trigger saves having the camera and flash connected by long wires. I would use it to have full mobility when taking a picture and not worry about tripping over or destroying cords.
Sleeping Beauty
The name of my photograph is named Sleeping Beauty. I chose to name my photograph like that because my niece is “sleeping” in the picture waiting to be woken up just like Sleeping Beauty was. I didn’t use no compositional rule in the making of this picture. I didn’t use no fancy camera but instead used my iPhone 5c that I used to have. I used iPhoto to edit the filter and make it a bit darker so the sunflowers and the paint on her face would pop out more. My photograph is in the Portrait division because it’s a picture of a person showing her sleeping mood and the color on her face and the sunflowers are surrounding her to show she’s also in her happy mood with a tiny smirk on her face. The picture was printed on Epson Glossy Photo Paper on the Epson P800 digital printer. What my photograph is about is a person relapsing back into his drug and alcohol addiction. I got this idea from a rapper named NF and his song called "Got You On My Mind" and part of his lyrics that says "Thinking that I'm good, but you know I'm about to relapse". What i did in photoshop is use lots of layer mask and filling in certain spots of the picture. After i used iPhoto to edit the lighting and se the effect that blurs out the picture in the corners to make it seem like tunnel vision.
Mandala means creating a picture out from an original. the way i created the mandala was opening up photoshop with the outline Mrs. Moncure had already created for us to use, then i picked the picture i want ed to use and used the "Wand" tool to trace over the picture and copy and pasted iron the outline, from there i would duplicate the layer horizontal or vertical and place it next to the the other and then merged the layers so after i would duplicate the layer to put it on the bottom vertical wise. What i liked about this assignment was creating the picture using the colorful parts from my original picture. I struggled with the wand tool to try and copy and pasting it on the outline. If i could do it over again i would do the mandala differently using another part from the original picture.
What I thought "tessellation" meant to me was just putting different pictures together to make them look creative. What I did in order to make a tessellation was crop the picture i wanted to use into a 1 x 1 square, then i went to open up another tab on photoshop to make a square white layer to fit in the picture, from there i then would duplicate the layer and move in vertical or horizontal to each other. What I liked about this assignment was being able to create another picture with an original. What I struggled with during this assignment was cropping the picture because when i would move it it would be bigger than the tessellation. If I could do it all over again I would do the picture cropping differently.
What i learned about portraiture from going to the duck pond is that it was a struggle trying to get a spot where if we captured the picture it wouldn't distract you from the model. The thing we used to decide on our poses was just randomly pick any row and it was helpful because we let it be. I used the reflector to put more "warm light" on the model too make it seem like the sun was setting as i took the pictures. I specifically retouched the blemishes on the models face. Some positions that use portrait photography is shift weight and diagonal lines. The person the hires them are the photographer. They earn an average annual income of $32,000 as of 2013. The average cost to take someones portraits photographs is $27 an hour.
The food I brought was the cookies and my partner brought the donuts, I used the baking plate, a cup, and my partner. Some stuff I learned from food photography is that the best tips are to have the correct lighting, have props and a background, be quick, style it, enhance it, and get down low and marco, which didn't know that having to style the food would make the picture better. What i made my photographs to look like a professional food photographer was to get good lighting and move the food around a little. Something I didn't know about food photography was the time it took to get the perfect photo. Some careers/businesses that use food photography is fast food (McDonalds etc.) places and commercials on the T.V. to get people to buy the food and make in look delicious. I think the thing I was successful in was capturing the lighting and its something I will continue to use in the photographs I capture.
The steps i did in photoshop in order to do my name was use the template Mrs. Moncure had already created for a 7 letter name, I then went to iPhoto to get my pictures i already selected to use and turn the into black and white (I cropped some in order to only get the letter itself). From there I resized the pictures to fit into the template and so one. I then saved it as "photoshop" & to save as a "JPEG" i had to "merge visible" the finishing product to get the final picture. Some steps I struggled with were getting the pictures into the frame with the right size and in taking photos It was hard trying to find a letter "R". What I like best about my artwork is just all the different shapes I was able to het a letter for my name but i really like the first shadow letter "A". What I think I could've improved on my artwork was capturing a better letter "M".
For all the photographs I transformed them into HDR pictures. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. The HDR process was a lot of work due to having to use a tripod in which the tripod i used was not stable enough. All though the process was to take 5 pictures of each in different exposures (-1,-0.5,0,+1,+0.5) the layer them on top of each other. After you get rid of the ghosts of the pictures movement, in the end you get the finished process (the final photograph.
The photo represents Balance. The principle of balance is within the cars being 2 red and 1 white. The photograph is successful because I was able to capture the cars and lucky one red one came just in time for me to be able to get this photograph. This photo represents Proportion. The principle of proportion is within the height difference of the trees which the two back one are the same height and the one in the front is a much smaller height. The photograph was successful because the trees were a good way of showing proportion which is of the height difference in the trees. The photo represents Rhythm. The principle of rhythm is with the flags movement in the air when being used. The photograph was successful because the color guard people were outside performing and I took the chance to get them practicing with their flags in movement. The photo represents Emphasis. The principle of emphasis is within the eye of my friend Amber. The photograph was successful because the color of her eye is in focus and takes the attention from her light skin tone to her blue eyes. The photo represents Harmony. The principle of harmony is within the sun and clear blue sky. The photograph was successful because in the picture you can see a bit of sunlight rays and glare.
LineThe photo is of Line. The element of line is within the shade of the rail reflecting onto the ground. The photograph is successful because of how the rails shadow was able to reflect onto the ground and i was able to capture t on time. ColorThe photo is of Color. The element of color is within the flowers on the socks of Rodrigo. This photograph was successful because Rodrigo was nice enough to let me get a picture of his beautiful socks. ShapeThe photo is of Shape. The element of shape is within the whole mural because of the longhorn and the broken pieces of tile. The photograph is successful because of the way it was taken, tilted. FormThe photo is of Form. The element of form is within the light and shadows of the flower bush. The photograph was successful because the tree in front was able to cast the shadow just in time on the bush and some sunlight was able to go through.
I took these pictures under shutter speed priority. Some struggles I had during the fast shutter speed was trying to capture a picture where the balloon pops and the water makes a shield as it falls on top of someones head like Mrs. Moncure, i eventually got one where i kept holding down the button to take the picture and captured multiple ones. What I learned about fast shutter speed is, take multiple photos of what you're trying to capture, so when you go back to look at them you have multiple ones to choose from. Also, to be accurate on what you are capturing. At last to enjoy yourself when taking these photos with fast shutter speed because they are incredible and fun to mess with too. You can also use fast shutter speed for racing, jumping, and anything else that requires to move in motion.
LineAs you can see here the lines are shown by the snow trail on the road as the carriage goes by. By using the lines of trails in the snow Stieglitz was able to put the main focus on the man going through the village. ValueIn this picture the main focus is on the girl. The shading in background makes the girl the main focus so when someone looks at this picture the focus of ones eyes in only on the girl since she is also wearing white which attracts the person too look at her.
I took these pictures of my partner on a tripod in a dark room. He used glowsticks and the app My Light Paint. Some struggles we had was trying to get the photo on time without getting cut off. What we learned with light painting is that its a process to get used too and get the right picture in the frame. Some other ideas we can do with light painting is do different types of ways to get a picture like using sparklers.
I changed the camera to shutter priority by capturing my classmates jumping in the air and taking pictures as they are in mid air. As you can see the pictures i took look really different because when you change the shutter speed, the pictures start to become blurry and my main subject looks in focus. I would want to use shutter speed as priority if I'm at the beach taking pictures of people walking on the pier, when I'm on an adventure with family or friends.
NOTES Shutter Speed
The inventor of the Cyanotype was John Herschel and was invented in 1842. The process uses two chemicals named ammonium iron(III) citrate and potassium ferricyanide. A piece of paper is put in potassium ferricyanide and then an item or items is placed on the paper. Sunlight then hits the paper and is left to sit for awhile. The other chemical is ferric ammonium citrate, and is then added to the paper. Then, after the photo is done being printed onto the paper, it is put into water which turns the paper blue. In modern day this is what we now call a blueprint.
